Employers Need to Prepare for Form I-9 Compliance with New Green Cards and EADs

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced a redesign to the Permanent Resident Card (also known as a Green Card) and the Employment Authorization Document (EAD).  The new cards are designed to be highly secure and more tamper-resistant.

USCIS began issuing the new cards on May 1, 2017, although some Green Cards and EADs issued after May 1, 2017, may still display the previous format as USCIS intends to use the remaining stock.  Additionally, certain EADs for individuals with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and other categories may have been automatically extended beyond the validity date on the card.  Some older Green Cards do not have an expiration date but remain valid.

It is critical that employers understand the acceptable documentation for Form I-9.  Employers using the Equifax I-9 Management solution do not need to worry as the system is updated to include sample images of both the new and previous versions of the Green Cards and EADs.  This is also true for the I-9 Management Mobile App which makes Section 2 document upload easier, helps promote compliant hiring, and increases protection of employee’s personally identifiable information to provide greater protection for employers and their new hires.

Additionally, the Equifax I-9 Management solution automatically tracks TPS and extends the expiration date in the system according to new regulations.  Employers can automatically receive notifications for expiring documents that require reauthorization.  An extended TPS will also automatically extend the reverification notice to help employers remain compliant.
